Ruth McGinley – Glass and Beyond

12 February 2026

New Gate Arts Theatre

£15/£10

Join us for an informal concert of moving minimalist music with pianist Ruth McGinley, as she performs a programme centred around the works of Philip Glass including Metamorphosis, Mad Rush and The Hours, alongside reworks of contemporary popular music.

Ruth’s career has been wide-ranging and daring, collaborating with some of the most acclaimed musicians working today, and straying from the typical classical-pianist journey.

But it is perhaps the spaces between where Ruth’s interests really lie. A determination to walk her own path, Ruth’s love of music goes far beyond the classical world. A highly sought-after collaborator, Ruth works with musicians from many backgrounds including jazz, folk, electronic and film music.

Ruth released her debut solo album ‘Reconnection’ to high acclaim in 2016 and released her follow up ‘Aura’ in October 2022 with Neil Martin. In 2024 she was awarded the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Major Individual Artist Award.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of NI’s finest pianists in a relaxed concert of meditative and immersive music.

“Ruth’s playing is exquisite and these airs move like the landscape in which they have emanated from; at times powerful with an undulating emotional outpouring, yet also peaceful and serene. I love Níon a’ Bhaoilligh for its nighttime quality and deep melancholy that can hover like a mist over those lush Irish mountains.” Hannah Peel, BBC Radio 3

“Aura feels like it has healing properties…it is soothing in the truest sense of the term. It washes over and around you, and calms and comforts. The way the notes hang in the air, the way it takes its own time to resolve…it’s a reminder of the idea that peace and calm are still out there.” Steven Rainey, BBC Radio Ulster

‘[McGinley’s] Stylistic variety is seamlessly blended throughout in intelligently proportioned playing, as sincere as it is supple. More please.’ Michael Quinn, Classical Ear
