Barry Douglas

Barry Douglas is one of Ireland’s most internationally celebrated musicians, renowned for his commanding artistry, expansive repertoire and longstanding contribution to musical life both at home and abroad. His international career was launched following his Gold Medal win at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow — the first non-Russian pianist to win the competition outright since Van Cliburn.

Since then, Barry has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lille, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Singapore Symphony Orchestra, appearing in prestigious concert halls and festivals across Europe, North America and Asia. Equally acclaimed as a recitalist and chamber musician, his performances have taken him from the Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall to Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall and the Verbier Festival.

A passionate advocate for contemporary music alongside the great Romantic repertoire, Barry has given premieres of works by composers including Kevin Volans and Krzysztof Penderecki. He is also widely recognised for his award-winning recordings on the Chandos Records label, including his acclaimed complete solo piano works of Brahms described by International Record Review as “a benchmark version.”

In 1999 Barry founded Camerata Ireland, bringing together outstanding young musicians from across the island of Ireland. Through performance and education, the orchestra continues to champion dialogue, collaboration and musical excellence internationally.

Barry was appointed OBE in 2002 and later CBE in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to music and community relations.
